What is TuneLab Tuner?
TuneLab Tuner is a precise instrument tuner and tuning library for iPhone. Use it to:
- tune guitar, bass and other stringed instruments with a live, on-device pitch meter
- browse standard and alternate tunings, save favorites and build your own
- set up instrument profiles with string gauges, including filling gauges in by scanning the barcode on a string pack
- experiment with tunings in The Lab and share them with other players
TuneLab is free to use. TuneLab Pro unlocks extra tools. It's available as a monthly subscription ($4.99/month), a yearly subscription ($39.99/year with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers) or a one-time lifetime purchase ($29.99). Prices are shown in US dollars and may vary by country. The App Store shows the exact price before you confirm.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tune my instrument?
- Open the Tuner and pick your tuning, for example Standard E.
- Play one string at a time and let it ring.
- Watch the meter. If the note reads flat (below center), tighten the string. If it reads sharp (above center), loosen it. When it centers and shows "In tune", move on to the next string.
Tips: tune in a quiet room, pluck firmly and let the note sustain, and hold the phone near the instrument's sound hole or amp. For an electric guitar, tune close to the amp or use a headset mic.
The tuner isn't reacting. How do I allow microphone access?
TuneLab needs the microphone to hear your instrument. Go to iOS Settings → TuneLab → Microphone and turn it on, then reopen TuneLab. Also check that no other app is using the microphone and that the phone's mic isn't covered by a case. Audio is processed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded. See the Privacy Policy.
The barcode scanner won't open.
Allow camera access in iOS Settings → TuneLab → Camera. Barcode scanning needs a device that supports Apple's live text and barcode scanner. If scanning isn't available, or your string set isn't recognized, type the barcode or the gauges by hand.
How do I restore my purchases?
Open Settings → Membership → Restore purchases in TuneLab while signed in to the same Apple Account you bought Pro with. Restoring is free, and you won't be charged again. If Pro still doesn't appear, check your internet connection, make sure you're using the right Apple Account (iOS Settings → [your name] → Media & Purchases), and try again.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by Apple through your Apple Account. Use either option:
- In TuneLab: Settings → Membership → Manage subscriptions, or
- On your iPhone: iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → TuneLab.
From there you can switch between monthly and yearly or cancel. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period. You keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for. If you cancel during the free trial, you won't be charged. A lifetime purchase is a one-time payment and never renews.
Can I get a refund?
Apple processes all payments, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Do I need an account?
No. TuneLab has no sign-up or login. Your tunings and settings are stored on your device.
How do I back up or move my tunings?
Your library is saved on your iPhone and is included in your normal iCloud or computer device backup. In The Lab you can also use Export this experiment to save a tuning as a file and Import a tuning file on another device. My Tunings can also share your saved tunings as text. Deleting the app deletes its data, so export anything you want to keep first.
What does TuneLab AI send?
TuneLab AI (TuneLab Pro, optional) sends the tuning notes, the description or question you type, your playing answers from setup (up to three genres, your playing level and your theory level) and a check of your Pro purchase, and only after you turn on its consent switch and tap send. Microphone audio is never sent. Pro includes a daily AI allowance: 5 requests a day, up to 100 a month on Monthly or Yearly and 30 a month on Lifetime. Theory Mutate and "How it sounds" work on your device without sending anything. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
I'm a TestFlight beta tester. How do I send feedback?
Thank you for testing! The quickest way is to take a screenshot in TuneLab and tap "Share Beta Feedback" in the screenshot menu. Or open the TestFlight app, choose TuneLab and tap Send Beta Feedback. If TuneLab crashes, TestFlight may ask whether to share details of the crash. Please say yes and add a note about what you were doing. You can also email tunelabtuner@gmail.com with your device model, iOS version and the TuneLab build number (shown in TestFlight).
Purchases in TestFlight builds use Apple's sandbox, so you are never charged for subscriptions or lifetime purchases made while testing. In TestFlight builds you can also turn on "Unlock Pro for testing" in Settings. TuneLab AI still needs a (free) sandbox purchase, because our server checks a real purchase with Apple.
